Graduate embarks on new career in security

National Workforce Network job seeker Nena Borovic has embarked on an exciting new chapter of her life after completing a six-week facilitated security course.

Nena was one of nine job seekers who recently graduated from the International Security Training Academy (ISTA) facilitated course after being referred by NWN providers MatchWorks and Direct Recruitment.

The graduates have been offered covert security positions for national employer M.A. Security Group.

Nena said the course included learning security techniques, how to use security technology and how to handle a variety of challenging situations.

“The first week was a mixture of theory and role-plays. My instructor for the first part of the liked to test our limits on how well we could keep cool under pressure,” she said.

“Each time we covered the theory part we were tested to see how well we could practically apply that theory into our role-plays. It was a lot of fun as our instructor also had an acting background and made it a really engaging experience.”

“The second part of the training was with a different instructor and in this part we learned about the technology side of security and learned how to be effective control or monitoring room operators.”

Nena said taking on a leadership role within the course boosted her confidence.

“I was lucky enough to be chosen into a leadership role for many of the role plays and initially I thought why did I keep being put in this role? But I’m really grateful because I learned how to be an effective leader whilst keeping the team happy,” she said.

“Being a leader was my most challenging task, as it requires a high level of quick decision-making skills, strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.”

Nena said her favourite part of the course was a practical operation in the field.

“We got to experience what it’s really like utilising all those skills we learned through all the theory, role plays, tests and the security law exam,” she said.

“We worked as covert loss and prevention security officers both in Big W and Dan Murphy’s.

“It was a real eye-opener to see that theft is a common occurrence in these retail stores and how much of a difference just two security officers could make to reduce loss of stock.”The group graduated in Melbourne last month and ISTA and M.A Security Group have expanded the course into Queensland.

Nena said completing the course had given her access to an industry she hadn’t considered being part of.

“Through it all I’ve formed new friendships, gained invaluable knowledge, built a great support network and I now have a brand new awesome career that I’m so excited to begin,” she said.
